Looking ahead: Collaboration and innovation for better public health – Annual Scientific Meeting 2023

The NIHR School for Public Health Research held its ninth Annual Scientific Meeting on Thursday 18th May 2023. The event was held in-person in Newcastle upon Tyne hosted by Fuse with more than 160 delegates attending including researchers, public partners and public health professionals. The event had 31 speakers and 16 posters from SPHR trainees.

The event aimed to bring members together to collaborate and connect face to face. It provided an opportunity to welcome new School members and strengthen the School’s network of researchers and public and practice partners.

Capacity building

ASM 2023 featured 16 posters from SPHR trainees including PhD students, pre and post-doctoral launching fellows. There were some fantastic posters and it was a valuable opportunity for members to meet the School’s trainees.

Poster winners were as follows:

• Winner of PhD poster prize: Lauren Cross, University of Cambridge, Capturing all voices in school-based mental health and obesity prevention research
• Runner-up PhD poster prize: Rukun Khalaf, LiLaC, What are the effects of green blue spaces (GBS) exposure on maternal and infant health?
• Winner of the post-doctoral launching fellow poster prize: Oluwaseun Esan, LiLaC, Microbes to mothers: Journey from understanding microbes to mothers in society
• Winner of pre-doctoral fellow prize: Cecilia Khofi-Szeremley, University of Bristol, My journey in public health nutrition
• Special award for creative use of imagery: Rhiannon Thompson, Imperial College London, My research journey so far

Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide a nomination and congratulations to all those who received a nomination. The winners that were announced at the ASM 2023 were as follows:

The winners for the EDI award categories were:
• Individual prize – Andeep Sull
• Team prize – FOR EQUITY team led by Jennie Popay and Emma Halliday

The winners for the PI&E award categories were:

  • Winner of the Innovation in practice category – the Fuse podcast group
  • Winner of the Recognition of long-term contribution to involvement and engagement – the HEPE group
  • Winner of the Equity and inclusion in practice category for researcher – Mary Crowder
  • Winner of the Equity and inclusion in practice category for public partner – Gillian Samuel
  • Winner of the Early career researcher recognition category – Olivia Alliott
  • Overall winner – the Fuse podcast group

Carbon footprint

The School are working with our event partners BeaconHouse Events to produce a carbon footprint report from this year’s ASM. This will help us monitor progress in reducing our carbon footprint and help us plan next year’s event.
