Earlier this week, the NIHR Schools for Public Health Research, Primary Care Research and Social Care Research hosted a webinar to explore engaging and working with young people.
Some communities are underserved when it comes to participating in research. The NIHR Schools for Public Health Research, Primary Care Research and Social Care Research are pleased to present the webinar series “Diversity and involvement: whom to involve?”. The first webinar of this series focussed on young people, the challenges that may be involved, and best practice when it comes to engaging and working with them.
During the webinar, we heard about the experiences and challenges encountered by SPHR researchers when working with young people. We were delighted to be joined by community partners, Chilypep and the Association for Young People’s Health who also shared their insights from the voluntary sector on working both with young people and participating in research.
Individuals attending the webinar had the opportunity to:
- Listen to case studies from researchers who have worked with young people
- Gain insights in best practice when working with young people
- Find out about the challenges that may be present
- Hear from community partners on their advice for engaging with them and young people
- Ask questions
Other webinars in the series will be on involvement of people with cognitive impairment and involvement of people who are often unheard. These sessions will take place in January and February 2022.
Speakers
Naomi Griffin – Naomi is a Research Associate in the Sport and Exercise Department at Durham University and is a member of Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health.
Mary Crowder – Mary is a Research Associate in the School for Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield.
Naomi and Mary both work on the SPHR Children, Young People and Families programme and are currently involved in research to explore children and young people’s understandings of inequalities in health. Naomi and Mary shared learnings from their experiences of working in partnership with youth organisations to engage with young people during the pandemic.
Emma Rigby – Emma is the Chief Executive of the Association for Young People’s Health and leads participatory projects with young people in research and practice settings with a focus on engaging groups of young people more likely to experience marginalisation.
Lesley Pollard – Lesley is the Managing Director of Chilypep, a youth work charity that works with young people to empower them to develop the skills and confidence to influence the decisions and services that affect their lives. Lesley shared her experience of working with universities to include the voice of young people in research, and what the challenges and benefits to this are.
