NIHR School for Public Health Research & NIHR School for Primary Care Research are hosting a joint webinar exploring how we can improve diversity in research.
Research participants are often not representative of the diversity you see in society or the community most at risk of being affected by a condition. The NIHR has established the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Programme Board and commissioned projects like NIHR INCLUDE to address this problem and identify recommendations to improve representation in participation.
Improving diversity in research participation is relevant across all research fields and is essential if we are to improve research, and ensure it is fit for purpose.
Individuals attending this event will gain further insights in developments on equality and diversity within the NIHR, listen to case studies and have the opportunity to ask questions.
Event Programme
Dr Paula Wray, member of the NIHR EDI Board, will start the session by sharing developments within the NIHR to support diversity and inclusivity within research. After hearing the NIHR perspective, two researchers from SPHR and SPCR will talk about their experiences of improving diversity in research.
Dr Vicki McGowan (Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University) is a Medical Anthropologist involved in the Equal England Network funded by SPHR. Equal England is a network for academics, researchers, practitioners and members of the public who have a shared interest in addressing health and social inequalities across England. Dr McGowan has been working on expanding the network to include members of the public from diverse background by establishing new relationships.
Dr Tanvi Rai (Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford) is a health researcher who was involved in the development of a home based blood pressure management intervention for people who have had a stroke and remain hypertensive. In the UK, strokes are more prevalent and have worse outcomes among people of a lower socio-economic status and from certain ethnicities. Therefore, Dr Rai undertook several initiatives to reach out to diverse communities seeking research participants to inform the optimisation of the intervention.
This will be followed by an opportunity for participants to ask questions to both Vicki and Tanvi, facilitated by Paula.
