Examining how ‘health inequalities’ take shape in professional practice: results from a meta-ethnographic review of existing research

12:00 -13:00

Dr Naoimh McMahon, NIHR SPHR Postdoctoral Launching Fellow will present findings from a systematic review of qualitative research which has examined how health professionals and decision-makers understand social inequalities in health.  This evidence base (14 research articles) has developed in response to concerns that despite growing understanding of the underlying causes of health inequalities, policy and practice remains too often focused on tackling symptoms of the problem. Naoimh will present a framework which explains the relationship between how people think about health inequalities, and the factors which mediate action on underlying causes. She will discuss the review findings, and resulting framework, in light of recent developments in the health equity literature.
