The SPHR Network for the use of Natural Experiments in Public Health is hosting this free online event presented by Dr Nina Rodgers.
Dr Nina Rodgers (MRC Epidemiology Unit & Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR)) will present on her recent natural experiment evaluation:
In April 2016, in response to the childhood obesity crisis, the UK government announced a Soft Drinks Industry Levy (UK SDIL) on manufactures of soft drinks. We anticipated that health benefits of the SDIL might extend beyond potential improvements in levels of obesity, by leading to better outcomes in children’s dental health. Firstly, we examined changes in childhood obesity prevalence in primary school age children 19 months after the levy came into force. Secondly, we studied the changes in hospital admissions for tooth extraction due to dental caries in children, 22 months post-SDIL. Both studies made use of routinely collected surveillance data, allowing for counterfactuals to be modelled on a scenario where the UK SDIL intervention did not happen.
