Research Review Panel (RRP)

To ensure that the work of SPHR meets the needs of public health practice and takes account of the needs and views of the public, it is important to us that we seek review from academic, policy, practice and public members in our funding decisions.

In 2022 we established an SPHR Research Review Panel (RRP) that includes academic, policy, practice and public members. The review panel conducts formative peer, practice and public review of all SPHR research proposals with funding decisions made by the SPHR Executive Group.

The Panel is chaired by Professor Frank Kee, Director of the UKCRC Centre of Excellence for Public Health Research (Northern Ireland), Queens University Belfast.

Membership of the RRP includes the following (additional members with specific expertise are co-opted onto the panel as required):

Professor Kate Hunt, Professor in Behavioural Sciences and Health at the Institute for Social Marketing, University of Stirling

Dr Helen Walters, Public Health Consultant Advisor to the Public Health Research Programme for NIHR

Professor Derek Ward, Director of Public Health for Lincolnshire and lead of ADPH Data, Intelligence & Research Policy Advisory Group

Professor Kate Walters, Director of the Centre for Ageing & Population Studies, UCL

Professor Shantini Paranjothy, Clinical Professor of Public Health, University of Aberdeen and Honorary Consultant in Public Health Medicine at NHS Grampian

Dr Felix Greaves, Director Science, Evidence and Analytics, NICE

Professor Simon Murphy, Professor in Social Interventions and Health, Director DECIPHer and Lead for the Schools Health Research Network

Dr Lisa Doyle, Director of Engagement and Influencing, People’s Health Trust

Professor Eugene Milne, Retired Director of Public Health, Newcastle City Council

Professor Rosa Barciela, Met Office Principal Scientific Consultant and Strategic Head of Health Science Integration (Weather and Climate).
